Motors or generators are connected across the mains in series to produce the desired effect. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement. A is the ordinary generator supplying the mains 1 and 2, and, in order to obtain a polyphase current to drive' motors, such as K, two machines M<1>, M', preferably synchronous motors, are connected in series as shown. A third wire 3 is connected to the intermediate point as shown. Fig. 4 shows a slightly-modified arrangement suitable for transformer distribution.
