Abstract
8529. Mills, B. J. B., [Edison, T. A.]. April 12. Roller mills.-Rock is delivered at intervals between a pair of massive rolls A, B running at a high speed so as to partially arrest the motion thereof, thereby breaking the rock by kinetic energy. The rolls are driven in opposite directions by a belt and friction clutches which allow their speed to be reduced without affecting that of the engine. They are provided with removable wearing-plates a formed with knobs c, some of which a are made specially large to exert a sledging action, and secured by T-head bars and screws. The roll shafts are each provided at the end opposite to the driving end with a thrust bearing consisting of split steel rings fitted in grooves in the shaft, which is embraced by a twopart collar correspondingly grooved and bolted to the journal bearing ; a dust cap is secured to the outer face of the collar. The apparatus is fed by means of a crane M.
