Tiles or slabs B for floors, ceilings, walls, conduits, &c. are made with central grooves a, twice the width of the side ribs b, and are arranged to interlock and break joint. In the construction of ceilings, the lower slabs rest with their plane faces undermost on the flanges of #-shaped bars C, supported by the joists A, and the upper slabs have their plane surfaces turned upwards. Halves and quarters of slabs are fitted in at the sides and ends of the joists, and the slabs are united by mortar to form a water-tight ceiling. The inner edges of the ribs b may be undercut, bevelled, rounded, or chamfered.
