5357. Dawson, A. T., and Buckham, G. T. March 4. Fortifications.-A concealed fort for artillery is constructed of masonry A on which is a convex armour-plate roof B. An embrasure or aperture for a gun G is protected by thick chilled metal sides C, D, an upper curved armour plate E, and armour wing plates F. The gun is further protected by a circular shield M, and is mounted on trunnion bearings made with gaps as described in Specification No. 10,606, A.D. 1896, to enable the gun to be run back on a trolley K mounted on rails. The chase of the gun is supported on guide-rollers on the mounting when the gun is run back. Projectiles may be stored inside the fort, and ammunition in a room L at the back. The fort is covered up and concealed by earthwork H, and may be made of sufficient width to accommodate several guns.
