2417. Bouchet, M. July 2, A.D. 1897, [date claimed under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883.] Electromagnets for use in magnetic switches. A vessel such as A is divided into two compartments a, b, and filled with mercury to the level n. The part a is connected to one terminal, and the part b to the other. On lowering a plunger the mercury level is raised above the top of the division c and the circuit is completed. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the plunger is carried by the movable core d of an electromagnet, and is shown in the raised position. The iron part of the electromagnet preferably consists of three pieces, two D and E forming part of the bobbin, and C a sheath. The polar extension of E is made of decreasing section at e. The core d is connected by a rod d' to a lid or cover M hinged at J and fitted with a spring P so arranged as to hold up the cover and with it the core and plunger when the core has once been raised.
