Abstract

29,929. Rothwell, O. O. Dec. 17. Scoring and marking billiards and like games. Fig. 3 shows an elevation from the back of a part of the scorer, Fig. 5 a plan of the indicating- mechanism, and Fig. 7 a side elevation of the mechanism for holding and releasing the roller. The mechanism is, of course, in duplicate, one portion for spot and the other for plain. The rectangular roller A, having a set of 25 numerals on each of its four faces so as to score up to 100, is mounted in bearings so as to be capable of rotating in either direction, and is provided at its zero end with bevel gearing D, D'. The sliding pointer B, of the usual shape externally, is provided behind the slot c with a catch pawl h gearing with a rack H to prevent backward movement of the pointer, which movement is brought about by an incline on the rack at its further end lifting the pawl, whereby a projection h<3> thereon is engaged by a pivoted lever h<2>. As the pointer is moved forward to score the game, it coils up a spring E by means of a connecting-cord K and a drum E' geared with the barrel of the spring. The spring is then free to draw the pointer backwards, and, when the pointer arrives at the zero end, the lever h<2> is struck by a pin, thereby allowing the pawl h again to fall. A projection u<1> from the pointer at the same time removes a spring pawl u from engagement with a ratchet U on the roller axle, allowing the latter at that instant to move backwards, as explained below. The intermittent forward rotation of a quarter of a revolution of the roller, which occurs each time the pointer is brought back to the zero end by the spring E, is also accomplished by the same spring, acting through a suitable train of wheels. The spindle m of the wheels d<4> (which is operated from the spring E) projects through the casing, and is connected by gearing to pointers rotating around dials so as to indicate twenty-fives, hundreds, and thousands. At the other end of the roller is the mechanism for automatically returning the roller to show its 0 to 25 face after 100 has been scored, or to allow that action to take place, after 50 has been scored, on pressing an external knob connected to the rod R. Upon the roller axle is a spring G, and a ratchet F, normally prevented from backward rotation under the action of the spring G by a pawl f. The pawl is removed from engagement with the ratchet by means of a pin f<1> projecting from the ratchet, and engaging with a loose finger P which engages with a pin f on the pawl and releases it from the ratchet. To release the rod R, whereby it may operate the releasing- mechanism when 50 has been scored, a second pin s<1> on the ratchet F removes the hooked end of a lever S from engagement with a pin r on the rod R. In a modification, the pointer travels as a screw which effects the forward rotation of the roller as each 25 is scored.
