Acetylene burners, atmospheric. -Relates to burners for consuming acetylene gas mixed with air so as to produce a non- luminous flame for stoves, furnaces, blowpipes, soldering- irons, water-heaters, incandescent illumination, &c. The principle employed is to direct a jet of acetylene from a nipple f so as to pass accurately through the centre of a contracted aperture b<1> at one end of the mixing-tube b, a sufficient supply of air being drawn in by the jet from the chamber c provided with apertures o for the entry of air. A diaphragm h of wire gauze ensures perfect mixture of the gas and air and prevents 'lighting back,' and the mixture is preferably burned from a series of small tubes i arranged in a ring or otherwise. Fig. 2 shows the burner adapted for incandescent illumination, Fig. 3 as a boiling-ring &c., and in Fig. 5 the burner is arranged so as to heat the soldering-iron s, conduction of heat from which is minimized by the supporting-rod m.
