Abstract

Gas or explosivevapour engines. - The engine has two d o u b l e - a c t i n g cylinders C arranged on opposite sides of the crank e and working on a six-stroke cycle; the air drawn in on the fifth stroke is forced on the sixth into the carburetter. The piston crossheads slide on guides b; the engine is provided with gearing and is suitable for motor road vehicles. The fuel-admission, exhaust, and airoutlet valves are worked by cams on a shaft F revolving at one third the speed of the crank shaft; the air-inlet valve works automatically. The air is forced into the carburetter through the valve k, Figs. 6 and 7 ; it enters through the pipe u and normally passes the valve v and pipe x; but when the pressure in the carburetter acting through the pipe y on the back of the valve and that of the spring v<1> are greater than that of the spring w<1> acting on the valve w, the latter opens and the air escapes through the port z into the atmosphere. The air enters the carburetter J through a nozzle t below the surface of the liquid, and draws a current of liquid upwards from the bottom of the vessel through the nozzle s; the carburetted air escapes from the top of the cylinder r.
