Abstract

14,910. Headland, H. W. June 19. Electric locomotives and motor vehicles.-Relates to electric motors for driving motor carriages, tramcars, &c. The armature is fixed on its shaft, and the field magnets are carried by a casing running loosely on the shaft, and the said shaft and casing are connected by bevel, skew, or worm gearing with one or more intermediate shafts, which transmit the power. In the form shown, the armature shaft B and field-magnet casing C carry bevel-wheels E and D which gear with bevel pinions H and G on an intermediate shaft F, which, by means of a worm M, may transmit the power to a motor-car axle O. A second shaft F' and axle O<1> may be driven in a similar manner. The armature shaft B and driven shafts F and F' are supported in ball bearings in a frame L. This frame may be suspended from the underside of a motor-carriage frame. When employing worm gearing, worms of opposite pitch on the field-magnet hub and armature shaft gear with two parallel shafts, which they drive in the same direction. The form of the supporting-frame may be variously modified.
