Abstract

7325. Thompson, W. P., [Fuller, C. D.]. April 9. Motors, controlling; motors, gearing for.-Relates to electric motors in which both the field magnet and the armature rotate in opposite directions, and consists essentially in connecting the two rotating parts through variable-speed gearing by means of which the speed and tongue of the motor may be controlled. In the construction shown, the armature H is secured on a shaft C provided at each end with ball bearings, while the field magnet G is supported by spiders G<1>, G<11> free to revolve on the shaft. The armature shaft C is connected to the hub of the field-magnet spider G<1> through variable-speed friction gearing, consisting of two friction-wheels D, D<1> with annular concavities, between which are disposed a pair of friction-wheels E<1> supported by pivots a in rockshafts E. By means of worm gears operated by a hand-wheel, the two rock-shafts may be simultaneously turned in opposite directions, so as to vary the distances from the centres of the wheels D, D' at which the intermediate wheels E' act. The power may be taken off from a pulley, or the motor may be connected directly to the driven shaft, e.g. in a lathe, drill press, or street car.
