Abstract

12,783. Blakesley, J. H. May 24. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed driving-mechanism for cycles and motor cars. Figs. 1 and 2 show the invention as applied to a bicycle. The pedal-crank axle h is provided with two bevel-wheels b, c gearing with two pinions d, e loosely mounted on a longitudinal shaft a and fixed thereto, when desired, by a sliding clutch m, n. Motion is imparted from the axle a to the rear driving-wheel through bevel pinions f, g. The clutch m is moved to throw either of the wheels d, e into gear, by means of a rod s which impinges against a transverse pin p fixed to a sleeve q acted on by a spring x. Pivoted catches n engage holes v in the sleeve q and hold the clutch in one or other of its several positions. The rod s is moved through the arms and links t, wires z, and hand-lever y. In the case of chain driven cycles, either of two chain-wheels may be thrown into gear. The Provisional Specification states that different arrangements or alternate sets of gearing may be thrown in or 'out of gear by moving the axles.
