Abstract

9820. Chiba, A. April 17. Tanning; hides and skins, tanned, treating.- Relates to the manufacture of leather suitable for gloves, and consists essentially in subjecting the leather to a process of chrome tanning after it has been tawed with alum. After the usual tawing process, the skins are left for some weeks to allow the alum to take full effect, and are then washed with warm water to remove excess of flour, alum, egg-oil, &c. They are then tanned in a fulling-vat with a solution prepared by mixing a solution of hydrated oxide of chromium in hydrochloric acid with soda lye until the solution is neutral. The leather is finally treated in a fulling-vat with yolk of egg and salt.
