Abstract

13,307. Consonno, L. June 27. Hides and skins, raw, treating ; tanning.- Relates to the unhairing, preliminary treatment, and tanning of hides and skins. When depilation is to be effected rapidly, the skins, after washing in pure water, are agitated in rotary drums in a warm solution of sodium sulphide or carbonate or other sodium salt together with mercuric iodide, after which they are washed, scoured, and fleshed. A slower process consists in the treatment of the skins in stationary vats with the above solution, together with milk of lime and arsenic, but this may also be employed in rotary drums. The skins ' are then prepared for tanning by washing, first with clean water, and then in a solution of sodium carbonate or other sodium salt, ammonia, and benzine, or a solution of carbonic-acid gas may be employed. Tanning is effected with normal tannin extracts in rotary drums, the motion of which is frequently reversed. A little animal or vegetable oil may be added. A vacuum may be formed in the drum, or cold air may be injected. The process enables sole leather to be produced rapidly and of equal quality with that obtained by prolonged tanning.
