4326. Lawson, J. C. Feb. 17. Moulding butter &c.-Butter or other plastic material is placed in a die box or container A and forced through holes a, a', a<11> into moulds in a plate o by a plunger F operated by a screw G, nut I, and rods b, b'. A horizontal sliding frame carrying a cutting- wire acts on bellcrank levers which project through slots in vertical sliding blocks R, R' carrying the mould plate o. A tipping- plate for delivering the blocks cut off by the wire is pivoted between crossheads of the cutting-frame, and is maintained in a horizontal position by a horn or cam-plate bearing against a guide-plate until the tipping-plate is over a travelling band or tray. The mould plate o is retained in position during the moulding operation by bolts of the cutting-frame entering slots in the blocks R, R', and is depressed into a tank of water K by the movement of the cutting-frame. The carrier tray, or paper from a roll, is fed forward by a pawl, which is attached to the bell-crank lever, and acts on a rack or ratchet-wheel. When the material is placed in the box A, it is first consolidated by closing the apertures a, a', a<11> by a sliding plate, and forcing down the plunger F. The cutting- wire is kept clean by coming in contact with the sliding plate and a brush, or a pad or felt, flannel, &c. The amount of butter forced through the holes a, a', a<11> is indicated by a ratchet-wheel on the screw acting on the hammer of a gong l, and by an indicator carried by the nut I moving over a stationary scale. The mould or die o may be dispensed with, and paper or other receptacles may be held under the apertures.
