Abstract
189,457. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie. Nov. 26, 1921, [Convention date]. Axial-flow type.-In order to dispense with, or reduce the number of, the fixed partitions separating the pressure stages of a multi-stage impulse turbine, the inlet and outlet edges of the stator guide-blades c terminate nearer the shaft than the edges of the adjacent wheel blades b, with the result that the motive fluid entering the guide-blades c has a suction action on the space e, and on passing out has a pressure action on the space between the two wheels, thereby equalizing the pressure throughout the space to a value p<11> lying between the values p<2>, p<3> on either side of the guide-blades, and obviating the need for a partition. The wheel rim may be provided with projections h, i for deflecting the stream of motive fluid towards and awav from the guide members. The axial thrust is taken by thrust bearing, or by a balance piston, or by a duplex arrangement of the turbine. Impulse stages without partitions may be combined in the same casing with either impulse stages fitted with partitions, a reaction turbine of the kind described in Specification 175,971, or with both. As described in Specification 124,734, in connection with reaction turbines, the guide blades may be made much wider than the wheel blades to permit of increased width for the wheel hubs.
