Abstract

1,077,251. Steam turbines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 7, 1966 [Feb. 15, 1965], No.754/66. Heading F1T. A multi-stage axial-flow elastic-fluid turbine is provided with collecting passages in the working fluid path, for example on the leading edge of a nozzle partition, through which working fluid is conducted to the space between the upstream side of the diaphragm and the adjacent rotor disc, the arrangement acting to cool the leakage fluid present in that space. The steam turbine shown comprises rotor discs 4, 5 formed integrally with a shaft portion 3, the rotor discs carrying blades 6, 7 respectively. Inter-stage diaphragms 11, 12 are supported from the stator casing 1, the diaphragms carrying nozzle partitions 13, 14 by which steam is directed on to the rotor blades 6, 7 respectively. The diaphragms carry seal members 15, 19, 25 and define with the adjacent rotor discs chambers 18, 21, 24. Pressure balancing ports 16, 17 are provided and extend through the rotor discs 4, 5. Slots 27 are provided in certain of the nozzle partitions 14, the slots communicating through passages 28, 29 with the space 21 between diaphragm 12 and rotor disc 4. Steam which has expanded through the rotor blades 6 and been cooled thereby is tapped off through slots 27 and passes to the chamber 21 where it acts to cool the leakage steam which has passed through the balance port 16 to the chamber. The cooled steam mixture in the chamber divides, part passing outwardly into the working fluid passage and the remainder passing inwardly thence through the seal 15 to the chamber 24 and so through the balance ports 17 to the next chamber where it is again cooled. The invention is applicable in the case in which balance ports through the rotor discs are not provided.
