Abstract

Moulds.-In casting ingots, wheels, and other large articles, a basic or other refractory block, adapted to float on the molten metal, is placed in the mould, before pouring, to prevent oxidation and conserve the heat. In top-pouring the block A may rest on a core F, Fig. 3, grip the sides of the mould B, Fig. 1, or be otherwise suspended. Either or both faces of the block may be recessed at A<1>, A<3>, and one or more apertures A<2> may be provided for the passage of the metal and for the insertion of a lifting staple before the metal has solidified. The block may be pre-heated and may be used with or without the usual separate feeder-head on bottom pouring.
