Abstract

Joint-making packing.-Sealing-channels into which bitumen or other liquified jointing-material is poured, are arranged in the flanges and bolts of joints, and are provided with inlet and outlet passages to facilitate pouring. The sealing- material is supplied by an inlet 3, Fig. 1, to a channel 1 formed in the face of a flange, an outlet 4 permitting the escape of air. The screwed plug 6 acts as a stop for the material when filling the channel. In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, cavities 7 connected by grooves 14 are formed around each bolt, and inlet and outlet passages 9 closed by plugs are formed in the bolts. In the horizontal-joint construction, Fig. 6 the container comprises a ring of channel iron 15 communicating with the bolt cavities 7 which may be formed by reducing the bolt-diameter or by grooving the flange. The bolt channel 9 may be replaced by a horizontal channel in the flange connected to the top of the cavity 7. Arrangements for vertical joints wherein the flanges are surrounded by containers having closed channels are described.
