MOLD FDR STEEL CASTlNGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 669,952, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed December 5, 1900. Serial No. 38,850. No model) To Z w fl it y OOWJWTIH zone, and Fig. is a vertical section of the Be it known that I, WALTER BRINIJON, a chill shown in Fig.
citizen of the United States, and a resident Inasmuch as my invention is particularly of Highbridge, in the county of Hunterdon adapted for casting projectiles I have here 5 and State of New Jersey, have invented an in shown the molds as constructed and ar- Improvement in Molds for Steel Castings, of ranged for such use; but it will be manifest which the following description, in connecto those skilled in the art that by suitably tion with the accompanying drawings, is a changing the shape or configuration of the specification, like letters on the drawings repmolds other articles may be cast in accordi-o resenting like parts. ance with my invention. In casting steel, and particularly steel pro- Referring to Figs. 1, 2, and 2, the chill a jectiles, it. has heretofore been the practice to of the mold is made of iron or steel and in use molds having a metallic lower portion, the present instance receives the molten steel such as iron or steel, in order to rapidly chill which is to form the point and head of the x5 the molten steel contacting with the metallic projectile, so that such parts shall be rapidly portion, the upper portion of such mold being cooled or-chilled by contact with the metal, constructed of sand or havinga sand lining, and the top of the chill is laterally enlarged, so that the molten metalin that part of the as at a, to providea firm support for the non mold will cool more gradually. Fig. 2 is a vertical tween the chilled and the non-chilled portions 0 sectional View thereof, the upper part of the thereof, the effect to such intermediate zone mold being broken away. Fig. 2 is a detail being to reduce the rapidity of cooling of the view similar to Fig. 1, showing the upper adjacent part of the casting, such rate de- 45 part of the chill with the sand omitted from creasing from the comparatively rapid rate the intermediate part of the'mold. Fig. 4 is a top or plan View of non-chilling member of the mold, such rea modification of the chill and intermediate tardation of the cooling preventing in the casting a sudden transition from rapid to slow cooling, with the attendant formation of cracks, openings, or other defects, or the setting up of highly objectionable internal strains in the casting.
In Fig. 3 the chill g is constructed in usual manner, except that the top thereof within the annular seat g for the non-chilling body portion or flask fis scalloped, corrugated, or serrated, as at 9 (see also Fig. 5,) and the sand lining e of the body portion of the mold is carried down to and between the corrugations, as ate Fig. 3, so that alternating and juxtaposed portions of metal and sand are presented at the intermediate portion of the mold for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
The construction of the chill is very clearly illustrated in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 4 I have shown in top or plan view a modification wherein the upper part of the Wall of the chill la is formed with internal ribs or corrugations, as 7t, extended in the takes place gradually at the intermediate portion of a mold, the rapidly-cooling portion of the casting below it and within the chill blending or grading into the more slowly cooling part in the body portion of the mold,
so that the resulting casting is free from the defects hereinbefore referred to.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A mold for producing castings, comprising a metallic portion to chill the contained metal, a sand portion to permit more gradual cooling of the metal adjacent thereto, and an intermediate zone composed of continuations of the metallic and sand portions of the mold in juxtaposition, and both exposed to contact with the incoming molten metal, and arranged to decrease the rate of cooling of the adjacent metal of the casting from the chill to the sand part of the mold.
2. A mold for producing castings, comprising a metallic portion to chill the contained metal, a sand portion to permit more gradual cooling of the metal adjacent thereto, and an intermediate zone composed of alternating portions of sand and metal.
3. A mold for producing castings, comprising a metallic portion to chill the contained metal, a non-chilling portion to permit more gradual cooling of the casting adjacent there to, and an intermediate portion formed oli.
overlapping and alternately arranged and exposed extensions of the chilling and nonchilling portions of the mold, to prevent sudden variations in the cooling of the intermediate portion of the casting.
' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
