A mould box for use in making bricks in a compression moulding machine comprises a pair of side walls 3, 4 and a pair of end walls 6, 7 interjoined to form a box open top and bottom, and each wall has inwardly projecting flanges extending at least partly along upper and lower edges to provide side and end recesses for a set of replaceable liners and at each joint a flange part of one wall overlaps a complementary non-flanged region of the adjoining wall. As shown, the mould box is divided into four compartments by a division plate S and two transverse plates 8, 9. The side plates have inward flanges 3a, 4a and the plates 5, 8, 9 have flanges 5a, 8a, 9a on both sides, all these flanges extending the length of the plates. The inward flanges 6a, 7a of the end plates extend along part only of their lengths only, leaving unflanged regions to be overlapped by the flanges of the side plates. The preferred material is mild steel. The liners which fit in the recesses formed by the flanges are removable for reacfing, and if a liner has been refaced, shims may be inserted when the liner is replaced, to allow for its reduction in thickness. Recessers are formed in the side liners for spigots on the ends of the transverse division plates. These transverse plates, and the end plates, may be of different lengths, resulting in the compartments of the box being of two different sizes. The flanges may be interrupted. Holes 11 may extend through the end plates, for lifting rods. The bolts to which hold the mould box assembly together also pass through the plane of the end plate.
