Abstract

For detecting the presence of gases in mines by means of flame-caps, a miner's safety lamp is provided with a subsidiary burner supplied with carburetted air from a portable carburetting-apparatus, adapted to be readily attached to the lamp, which will burn with a hot flame. Substances such as many copper derivatives may be added to the hydrocarbon in the reservoir of the carburetting-apparatus so as to produce a coloured flame when the gas at the subsidiary burner is ignited.
