Angular bending ; dias.-Angle irons &c. are bent by a pair of dies, one of which is reciprocated towards the other and has three inclined acting surfaces engaging complementary surfaces in the other die, one pair of acting surfaces being arranged so as to traverse laterally in a direction at right angles to that of the reciprocating die during bending. The lower die A is provided with a saddle C extending at right angles from an inclined seating B and having the upper walls 2 inclined from an apex as shown in Fig. 3. The apex may be flat or curved and may consist of a detachable block inserted in a recess in the saddle. The die is held in its retracted position by a spring D, or by a weight, hand lever &c. The upper die E is formed with a jaw F similar in shape to the top of the lower die, and with a roof 3 and face 4 respectively complementary to the face 1 of the saddle and to the seat B. When an angle-iron is to be bent with its flange 5 resting on the face 1, a right-angled portion is removed therefrom at the point of the bend, the edges being subsequently welded together. If bending is performed with the flanges 5 projecting in the other direction, the flange is cut at right angles to its length and a corner plate welded into the gap after bending. Packing pieces are fitted on the seat to accommodate angle irons of different depths, and packing pieces may also be fitted into the jaw F to reduce its span. For bending channel bars &c., slots may be formed at the back of the saddle to take the lower flange. The lower die may be reciprocated instead of the upper die.
