Description
Jan. 19, 1932 H. H. LAMPERT ADJUSTING TOOL FOR TIE ELEMENTS Filed April 16. 1928 Patented Jan. 19, 1932 UNITED STATES HENRY H. LAMPERT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS ADJUSTING TOOL FOR TIE ELEMENTS Application filed April 16, 1928.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved tool for adjusting a tie element relative to a clamp; to provide a tie adjusting tool which is particularly adapted .5 for use in connection with form clamps used in concrete construction work; to provide a form tie adjusting tool having improved means for gripping the tie element; and to provide a tool of this kind having an improved form of bearing member adapted to straddle the clamp and to fulcrum on a structural shape engaged by the clamp.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of a structural shape, showing also an improved tool fulcrumed thereon in position to adjust a tie band relative to its clamp.
Fig 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation, taken from the left of Fig. 1, and showing the tie band in section.
A tool embodying this invention is adapted for use in connection with many different types of form clamps. In the form herein shown, the tool is used in connection with a tie band 1 and a form clamp 2supported on an I-beam 3, which is surrounded by the usual mold sections, not shown.
In the construction illustrated, the clamp 2 comprises a sheet metal plate 4, having one end curled to provide a bearing hook 5 adapt- -ed to embrace one edge of the beam flange.
Portions of the plate 4: are struck out therefrom to provide recesses 6 and overlying bridge portions 7 arranged to provide guideways for the tie band. The bridge portions 7 are bendable when struck with a hammer or similar tool for kinking the tie by forcing portions thereof into the recesses 6 after the tie has been properly adjusted by means of the improved tool.
In the form shown, the improved tool comprises a shank 8 and a pivoted bearing memher 9.
The shank 8 provides a handle for the tool and its inner end is serrated to form a jaw 10 adapted to grip the outer face of the tie 1.
Serial No. 270,499.
The bearing member 9 includes a cross bar 11 having inclined faces 12 and 13 adapted to engage the inner face of the tie. Formed on the cross bar 11, is a pair of spaced ears 14 pivotally connected to the shank 8 by a pin 15. The parts are arranged'so that, when the handle 8 is swung to an angular position relative to the bearing member 9, an opening is provided between the jaw 10' and face 12 for receiving the portion of the tie 1 which projects beyond the clamp 2.
Also formed on the cross bar 11, is a pair of depending lugs 16 spaced apart so as to permit the bearing member 9 to straddle the form clamp 2. The lugs 16 are sli htly recessed, as shown at 17 to permit them to fulcrum on the edge of the beam flange on respectively opposite sides of the clamp.
The space between the lugs 16 forms a recess for receiving the clamp hook 5. The outer face 18 of the cross bar 11 is slightly convex and is adapted to secure the clamp 2 against outward movement during the adjustment of the tie.
In operation, one'end of the tie is inserted through the clamp and the latter then applied to the I-beam. The tool is then applied to the projecting end of the tie and placed so as 'to straddle the clamp, with the edges 17 engaging the beam flange. The tool is then rocked outwardly so as to pull the tie relative to the clamp.
During the adjustment of the tie relative to the clamp, the outer end of the clamp has a tendency to raise from the I-beam but it is forced downwardly by the cross piece 11.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A tool for adjusting a form tie relative to its clamp, comprising a shank, means on said shank for gripping the tie, a bearing member having a recess for receiving part of the clamp to permit said tool to straddle the clamp, portions of said member located 1 on respectively opposite sides of said recess being adapted to fulcrum on the work engaged by said clamp, said bearing member having a bearing face adapted to press the clamp into firm contact with the work, and other means on said bearing member adapted to grip the tie.
2. A tool for adjusting a form tie relative to its clamp comprising a shank, means on said shank for gripping the tie, a bearing member including a cross bar and a pair of spaced lugs adapted to straddle the clamp to permit said lugs to fulcrum on the work engaged by said clamp, said cross bar having a convex bearing face adapted to press the clam into firm contact with the work, and anot er face on said cross bar adapted to grip the tie.
3. tool for adjusting a form tie relativeto its clamp comprising a shank, a bearing member including a cross bar, a pair of spaced ears arranged on said cross bar and pivotally connected to said shank, a jaw formed on the inner end of said shank, said jaw and cross bar being adapted to grip the tie, and a pair of spaced bearing lugs depending from said cross bar and having recessed edges adapted to fulcrum on the work engaged by the clamp, said cross bar having a bearing face adapted to press the clamp into firm contact with the work.
Signed at Chicago this 13th day of April,
HENRY H. LAMPERT.
