Description
Oct. 26, 1948. F, ROSSER 2,452,325
FORM-SECURING CLAMP Filed May 10. 1946 Patented Oct. 26, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to portable clamps for securing forms in position in connection with concrete work.
An object of the invention is to provide a formsecuring clamp of an improved and simplified structure, which can readily be applied to a pier or wall in conjunction with form boards to hold such form boards in position in the laying of sills or beams or other similar structural elements.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved clamp shown in position with respect to a wall;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of two pairs of clamps as applied to a wall;
Figure 3 is a transverse cross-section taken on line 3-3 of Figure l and,
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the clamp.
The improved clamp comprises two strut members l and 2, herein illustrated as of T cross-sec,- tion and arranged in substantially parallel relationship with the head portions l-2' confrontm each other.
To one of the strut members I is secured intermediate its ends transverse members 3-3 which are conveniently spaced as by reinforcement bracket 4, the ends of said bracket 4 and the spaced members 3-3 being welded or otherwise rigidly secured to the inner face of the head i, so that the arms 3-3 extend substantially perpendicular to the surface of said head I.
The opposed strut member 2 has portions of its head part 2' cut away to permit the passage of the free ends of the arms 3-3, which ends straddle the adjacent web portion of the strut 2 and are pivoted thereto as by rivet 6.
The upper ends of the struts l and 2 have end portions of the head parts I and 2' cut away to permit the pivoting of the lever members 1 and 9 of a toggle device to the ends of the struts l and 2. As herein illustrated, lever I has one end pivoted to the web of strut 2 as by rivet 8 and its opposite end pivoted to the end of lever 9 as by pivot 8', while lever 9 is pivoted to the web of strut l as by pivot 10- and extends beyond the strut to form a handle I l, by means of which the toggle levers l and 9 can be manipulated to rock strut 2 on its pivot 6 with respect to strut l For the purpose of assuring correct alignment of the form boards, lugs l3-l3 are associated 2 with the transverse arms 3-3 to depend below the lower edges of said arms and engage the upper edges of the form boards, as illustrated in Figure 1.
Preferably, also a lug I2 will be secured to the upper end of strut l to limit the throw of levers I I when the toggle is straightened.
In use, the form boards F will be positioned one on either side of the base wall or pier W, having portions of said boards extending above the top of the wall or pier to the depth desired in the concrete element being cast, .and a plurality of the clamp members of the present invention will be positioned at spaced intervals with the lugs 13 engaging the inner top edges of the form boards, whereupon, by straightening the toggle levers 'l and 9, the upper ends of the struts l and 2 will be forced apart and the lower ends brought together in clamping relationship to the form boards F-F in connection with the intermediate wall W, thus securely positioning the form boards and retaining same while the concrete is poured and until the same sets. The clamps and form boards can be readily removed by breaking the toggle levers 1 and 9.
Various modifications in the precise forms of the various elements will readily suggest themselves but within the scope of the present invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
Form clamp for concrete work comprising two struts of T cross section, the heads of said struts constituting bearing faces, an arm projecting perpendicularly from the bearing face of one strut intermediate its ends, the second strut having a portion of its head intermediate its ends cut away, spaced lugs secured on the arm and projecting below the edge thereof, to constitute form-engaging members, a pivotal connection between the end of the arm and the web of the second strut, and two pivoted toggle levers, the end of one of said toggle levers pivoted to the end of one strut and the other toggle lever pivoted intermediate its ends to the end of the other strut.
RQBERT F. ROSSER.
