This invention relates to an improved wrench and an object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a handle and jaw arrangement of such a character that when leverage is brought to bear upon the wrench handle the jaws will shift towards one another for positively clamping the work therebetween and in a manner to preclude slipping of the wrench.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a side elevational view of the wrench.
Figures 2, 3, and l are sectional views taken substantially on the lines 2-2, 3--3 and i-d,
respectively, of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the wrench with the frame member removed.
Figure 6 is an edge elevational view of one of the jaws.
Figure '7 is an elevation of the jaw end of the wrench showing one type of removable jaw members attached to the regular jaws of the wrench.
Figure 8 is a similar view and showing removable jaw members provided with punching holes in articles.
Figure 9 is a similar view but showing the removable jaws provided with means for cutting a pipe or the like.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that in accordance with the present invention the wrench embodies a pair of complemental jaws 5 and 6 respectively.
The jaw 5 is formed integral with a shank I that at its lower end is laterally enlarged as at Ia and, as shown, is provided with an elongated relatively wide slot 8. In the lower edge thereof the end portion id of the shank is provided with a slot 9.
The jaw 6 is provided with an integral shank I0 and at one side of the shank is provided with a rib ii that has a sliding fit in a groove I2 provided therefor in the shank of the jaw 5 as shown,
The lower portion of the shank i0 is bifurcated to provide a pair of parallel shank extensions Ilia,
each of which is provided with an oblong opening I3.
Slidable within the slot 8 in the end la of shank I is a block It that is bifurcated to provide a pair of ears I5 between which is pivoted as at I6 the head portion of a handle I! which has the reduced head portion I'Ia thereof passing through the slot 9.
The head I'Ia has a lateral portion I'I' working through a slot 20 in the end Ia of shank 1 and in the same edge of the shank in which the groove I2 is formed, and said portion I'I passes between the shank extensions Illa and is provided with the pin I7" which enters the openings I3. The block i4 is secured at the desired position of adjustment within the slot 8 through the medium of an adjusting screw 2| that has threaded engagement with the block I5 as shown and works in a slot 22 provided in the edge of 10 the end portion Ia of shank I opposite to the aforementioned slot 20.
Block M is provided with ribs 23 that are cooperable with transverse grooves 25 provided at one edge of the slot 8 for securing the block I 4 16 at the desired position of adjustment when the adjusting screw 2! is threaded home, and as is thought to be apparent.
From the description of the invention thus far it will be seen that an initial adjustment between 20 the jaws 5 and 6 may be made by sliding the jaws relative to one another to position the block I4 at the desired position of adjustment after which the adjusting screw 2I is threaded home to secure the block It at the desired position of adjustment. With the jaws 5 and 6 thus properly adjusted the work is placed therebetween and obviously upon application of leverage to the handle Ill jaws 5 and 6 will have a sliding action in reverse directions relative to one another and 30 thereby causing said jaws to move into binding engagement for clamping the work therebetween, with the jaws engaging the work in a manner to preclude slipping of the wrench.
Completing the structure of the wrench is a 35 substantially U-shaped frame 24 which straddles the shanks I and II]. The frame 24 is held in position by being fastened directly to the end Ia. of shank I through the medium of bolts or other fastening elements 25. 40
Figure '7 shows a pair of removable jaw members 35 removably connected to the jaws 5 and 6, each member 30 including a straight jaw part 3I having teeth 32 on its inner face for engaging the teeth of the jaws 5 and 6, the other face 45 of the part 3| being plain. A curved portion 33 is connected to the outer end of the jaw part 3| to fit over the rounded part of either the jaw 5 and 6 and this part 33 carries a screw 34 for clamping the removable jaw member to a jaw 50 of the wrench. As will be seen from Figure '7 these jaw members 30 provide a smooth flat clamping surface on the jaws 5 and 6 so that the wrench can be used for turning nuts, bolts and the like, 55
1O arranged to cut pipes or the like and in this .will enter the hole 36 and punch a hole in the member A.
Figure 9 shows the jaw members 30 as being arrangement the member which engages the jaw 5 carries a pair of rollers 38 for engaging the pipe B and the member which engages the jaw 6 carries a pair of roller cutters39. Thus by moving the jaws 5 and 6 toward each other until the rollers 38 and cutters 39 engage the pipe and jaw members the wrench can be easily and quickly then by rotating oroscillating the wrench the cutters 39 will cut the pipe.
Thus it will be seen that with these removable changed from the construction shown in Figures 1 and 5, the jaw parts of which are provided with teeth, to smooth jaw parts'for turning nuts and,
the like, as shown in Figure 7, or to: a device for punching sheet metal and the like as shown in Figure 8 or for cutting pipes and'the like as shown in Figure 9.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, operation, utility and advantages'of a wrench structure embodying the features of the I present invention will be had without a more detailed description.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A wrench of the character described comprising a pair of complemental jaws each provided with an integral shank. the shank of one of said jaws having a slot in one end'thereof and also provided with a groove in one edge thereof extending lengthwise along the shank from the jaw-equipped end thereof, and the shank of the other of said jaws having a rib on one edge thereof engaging in said grove, a block arranged in said slot, the shank of the first-named jaw also having a slot in one edge thereof, an adjusting screw having a threaded shank portion extending I through the last-named slot and threadedly engaging said block for drawing said block into binding engagement with the first-named shank to secure the block at the desired position of adjustment, and a handle member provided at one end thereof with a head pivotally connected to said block'and' also having an eccentric connection with the shank of the second-named jaw.
2. A wrench of the character described comprising a pair of 'complemental jaws each provided with an integral shank, the shank of one of said jaws having a slot in one end thereof and also provided with a groove in one edge thereof extending lengthwise along the shank from the jaw-equipped end thereof, and the shank of the I block at the desired position of adjustment, and
a handle member provided at one end thereof with a head pivotally connected to said block and also having an eccentric connection with the shank of the secondmamed jaw, and a substantially U-shaped frame straddling said shanks and having the sides thereof positively secured to the shank of the first-named jaw at the slot equipped end of the mentioned shank.
3. A wrench of the class described comprising a pair of complemental jaws each provided with a shank, the shanks being relatively slidable longitudinally in edge to edge engaging relation, the shank of onejaw having a slot in one end thereof, a block adjustable in said slot, the shank of the other jaw having an edge recess therein, an adjusting screw threaded through the slotted shank into said block for clamping the block to one side of the slot in dififerent adjusted positions, and a handle member provided at one end thereof with a head pivotally connected to said block and having an eccentric connection in the recessed edge of said other jaw.
