NECK'IIE PRESS.
Application filed. August 16, 1921. Serial K051192301.
To aZZ whom it may concern. I
Be it known that I, ELISHA S. NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Asginwall, in the county of Allegheny and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Necktie Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates broadly to clothes presses, and more particularly to presses of this character adapted for remov ing the wrinkles .from neckties. I
An important object of the present invention is to provide a press having members for receiving the wrinkled tie therebetween and means for exerting a gradually increasing pressure on said members.
Another objectof the present invention is to provide a press of this character having a pair of pressing members, at least one of which is tapered throughout the length thereof, and a binder for receiving said members and for exerting'a gradually increasing compressing action thereon.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a press of this character with at least one of the members thereof having a reflecting surface which may be utilized as a mirror. v
The foregoing and other objects of the present invention, together with their attendant advantages, will be apparent as the invention becomes better understood by reference to the accompanying specification and drawings forming a part thereof, it being premised that changes may be made in the various details and the manner of operation within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of press embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 11-11 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view, corresponding to Figure 2, illustrating a modified form of press;
Figure a is a plan view of a modified form of binder used with the construction shown in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view of a still further modified form of press;
Figure 6 is aperspective view of one of the press members shown in section in Figure 5; and
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the press members shown in section clothing, including necktie presses. Such presses have, however, not been of such construction as to adapt the same particularly for use with neckties by providing presslng members cooperating with a binder so shaped that the degree of compression exerted on said pressing members may be varied.
The present invention overcomes the objections which have existed with presses of this general nature, and provides a tie press adapted to receive ties of any description and effectively remove wrinkles from any portion thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is illustrated in Figure 1 a press comprising a lower pressing member 1, provided with a gripping handle 2 on one end thereof. Cooperating with the pressing member 1 is an upper pressing member 3 which is preferably tapered throughout the length thereof in the direction of its thickness, as clearly shown in Figure 1. These members are adapted to receive between their cooperating flat surfaces the wrinkled portion of a necktie, as clearly shown in' dotted lines in Figure 1 and in section in Figure 2. After the tie is in position between the members, they are slipped into an open-ended U-shaped metallic binder 4;. This binder is preferably of uniform width throughout the length thereof to cooperate with the pressing members, but has its sides inclined to correspond to the taper on one of the pressing members. Due to this construction, it will be apparent that as the binder is moved longitudinally with respect to the members, the degree of compression exerted thereon will be gradually increased. This feature of the invention is of considerable importance as it enables the device to be used with ties of different thickness and insures a sufficient pressure to effect the desired smoothing thereof.
The binder 4 is preferably constructed of highly polished metal whereby the back surface 5 thereof may be utilized as a mirror during the tying of the necktie.
In the construction illustrated in Figures 3 and 4:, the pressing members 6 and 7 are between the two members, they are adapted to be engaged by U-shaped binders Qhaving a hinged connection .10, by forcing these binders more closely together, the pressing members 6 and 7 willbe forcedmoretightly into engagement with the tie by reason of the tapered edge portions 8 on one of the press members. a
In the construction heretofore described,
the pressing members are preferably formed of wood, but in Figures 15 to 7 thereisdisclosed a metallic construction comprising metallic pressing members .11 and 12-adapted to receive the tie therebetween. .The member 11 has upwardly curved' edge portions 13 gradually decreasing in height throughout the length thereof, as clearly shown in Figure 7, to providea tapered 1 construction. A binder such as shown in Figure 1,- and designated in the drawings with reference character 4', may be utilized withthis construction. The metallic pressing member-12may have either or both of the sides thereof polished to provide a mirror, the use of which is facilitated by'the handle 14 formed thereon. The pressing device may be-easily manipulated and-is effective for entirely removing wrinkles from the 'tie by reason of itsability to exert a variable compression on the tie. For-these reasons the present invention may be advantageously substituted for presses at present in use.
It will be apparentthat the shape of the various members employed may be varied as desired and that the tapered construction need not necessarily be limited to either of the pressing members.
Iclaim:
1. A press of the character described, comprising a pair of pressing members, at least one of which has a varying thickness throughout different portions thereof, and a binder member adapted to receive said pressing members, substantially as described.
2. A press of the character described, comprising a pair of pressing members, at least one of which has a varying thickness throughout different portions thereof, and a U-shaped metallic binder member adapted to receive said pressing members, substantially as described. I
3. A press of the character described, comprising a pair of pressing members, atleast .one of which has a varying thickness throughout different portions thereof, a handle on one of said members, and a binder member adapted to receive said pressing members, one of said members having a reflecting surface constituting a mirror, substantially as described.
4;. A press of the character described, comprising a pair of pressing members, at least one of which is of tapered thickness throughout the length thereof, and a binder member adapted to receive said pressing members, said bindermember being movable with relation to said pressing members to increase the pressure exerted thereon, substantially as described.
5. A press of the character described, comprising a lower pressing member of substantially uniform width throughout the length thereof, a handle on said member, an upper pressing member of varying thickness throughout the length thereof, said members being adapted to receive a tie therebetween, and a binder member adapted to cooperate with said pressing members, substantially as described. v
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
