IRWIN OTTO HARMS, 0F HILLSBORO, KANSAS.
SHOEHORN'.
1,4,23A22, Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 18, 192% Application filed August 31, 1921. Serial No. 497,173.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRWIN 0. Plants, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hillsboro, in the county of Marion and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Shoehorn, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in shoe horns, an object of the invention being to provide a shoe horn equipped with a handie member, which will obviate the necessity of the user bending way over to put on a shoe.
A further object is to provide a shoe horn equipped with a novel shoe engaging member, which will cooperate with the horn proper in, forcing the shoe upon the foot.
Still another object is to provide a device of this character, which will be simple and practical in construction, durable and efiicien't in use, and exceedingly inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of use of my improved shoe horn;
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4: is a similar view on the line 4i-ft of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a substantially U-shaped yoke, which includes an intermediate portion 2 adapted to engage under the heel of a shoe, and a pair of arms 3. The arms are appreciably closer together at their extremities than they are at their point of junction with the intermediate portion of the yoke. The arms 3 are formed at their extremities with integral hooks 4t and a wire 5 serves to connect the extremities of the arms.
One of the hooks i is preferably large enough to permit the wire 5 to be slipped out when disassembling the device. I iave used the reference numeral 6 to designate an ordinary shoe horn. A plate 7 integral with the smaller end of the horn is located at right angles thereto and is pivotally connected to the bolt 5, the plate being slitted and bent to provide bearing sleeves 8 which pivot on the bolt. At its other end, the plate is integral with a handle member 9, also located at right angles to the plane of the plate and extending in an opposite direction to the horn 6. The handle member 9 terminates in a curved palm grip 10 to facilitate the ban dling of the device.
The manner of use of the tool will be apparent. lVhen it becomes desirable to don a shoe, such as 11 in Figure 1, the intermediate portion 2 of the yoke 1 is hooked under the heel of the shoe. The handle 10 is pivoted, swinging the horn 6 into proper position on the inside of the shoe. The user grasps the palm grip 10 and pulls upwardly on the same as the foot is slipped into the shoe. After the foot is in place, the handle is swung, pivoting the plate 7 on the wire 5 and lifting the horn 6 out of the shoe. The tool not only has the ordinary advantages of the shoe horn, but has the additional fea ture of the yoke, which exerts upward pressure on the shoe, as the foot is forced into the same.
Although I have illustrated one of the preferred embodiments of my invention, it will be evident that various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but shall consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A device of the character stated, including a heel engaging yoke, a cross piece connecting the extremities of the yoke, a plate pivoted on the yoke, a shoe horn integral with one end of the plate and located in a transverse plane to the plane of the plate, a handle integral with the other end of the plate, and substantially parallel with the shoe horn.
2. A device of the character stated, including a heel engaging yoke, a cross piece connecting the extremities of the yoke, a plate pivoted on the yoke, a shoe horn integral with one end of the plate and located in a transverse plane to the plane of the heel engaging yoke, across piece connecting plate, a handle integral with the other end the extremities of the yoke, a plate pivoted of the plate, and substantially parallel With on the cross piece, a shoe horn and a handle 10 the shoe horn, said plate being slitted and member integral with opposite ends of the 5 bent to provide openingstherein receiving "plate and extending in opposite directions said cross piece. from the plane of the plate.
3. In a device of the character stated,-a IRWIN OTTO HARMS.
