Abstract
A fat stock, for example a mixture of equal parts of cocoanut or palm oil and pressed tallow, is saponified with a considerable excess of soda lye, amounting preferably to 1-2 parts by weight of caustic soda to 1 part of fat. From one-third to one-fourth of the excess caustic soda may be replaced by its equivalent of sodium carbonate. Preferred quantities for 1 kg. of fat are 0.750 kg. of caustic soda, 0.265 kg. of sodium carbonate, and 8-10 kg. of water. The saponified mixture is concentrated with constant stirring until a granular, plastic product is obtained. When required for use this product is mixed with 10 times its weight of boiling water, forming a solution which solidifies to a paste upon cooling.
