Abstract

187,657. Meek, J. W. June 21, 1921. Smoke, consuming. -The smoke produced in steam-generator &c. furnaces is consumed in an auxiliary furnace situated between the main furnace and the outlet flues bv being passed through and over a layer or screen of fuel therein which is maintained incandescent, an alternative path for the gases direct to the flue outlet being provided. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the gases are diverted from the main flue b and passed through flues c beneath and through the grate d of a feed-water heater a, air being supplied by means of an air inlet e. a part of the air being passed, if desired, upwardly through a flue f behind the fire-bridge. Dampers g, h serve to pass the gases either through the auxiliary furnace or direct to the chimney. In a modification, Fig. 3, the damper g is above and beyond the grate d, and the damper h is beneath the grate. In this form, the setting may be used for mounting coils of piping through which the feed-water may be passed, or the heat mav be utilized for any other purpose. In Fig. 4, where a chain grate k is shown, a cross wall i, and a side flue j leading to the main flue or below the grate, are provided, so that the smoke from fresh fuel on the grate is passed by the flues j to beneath the grate. The incandescent screen on the supplementary grate may be formed by injecting pulverized, liquid, or gaseous fuel on to a block of refractory material or a perforated metal plate, and the waste gases may be projected through the screen by means of a steam or air injector, or the air may be delivered bv a fan. To ensure an adequate supply of smoke to the auxiliary furnace, smoke-producing substances may be burnt, either in a separate or in the main furnace, or in retorts heated by the flue gases.
