Abstract

186,908. Westinghouse Gear & Dynamometer Co., (Assignees of Hodgkinson, F.). Oct. 4, 1921, [Convention date]. Toothed gearing.-An arrangement of double reduction gearing between coaxial driving and driven shafts, designed for equal distribution of load, comprises a hollow driving pinion 27 having single helical teeth of small pitch angle, for example of 15‹, hollow intermediate gears 30 meshing with the pinion and connected by flexible shafts 32 with rigid couplings 32<1> at the ends to pinion members having oppositely inclined helical teeth 31, 31a meshing with a corresponding double helical gear 33, 33a on the driven shaft 34. The hollow pinion 27 is provided with bearing portions 27<1>, and is connected to a flexible driving shaft 25 by keys 28 or other means. Thrust bearings 35, 36 maintain the driving and driven shafts in position. The intermediate gears 30 and double pinions 31, 31a are free to move axially to equalize the tooth pressure being provided respectively with bearing portions 30<1>, 31<1>. The inclination of the helical teeth of the left hand gears 31, 33 may be arranged to balance the longitudinal thrusts caused by the oppositely inclined gears 31a, 33a and 27, 30. A known arrangement in which the single helical gear pairs 27, 30 are replaced by double helical gear pairs and the couplings allow endlong movement of the gears, is also described.
