Abstract

186,799. Tesla, N. Sept. 2, 1921. Disc apparatus.-A rotor or rotating part of machinery is balanced by grinding off the excess when it is driven at a high speed, for which purpose it is mounted on a flexible shaft or upon yieldable supports and rotated, the excess material being removed by abrasion until balance is attained. As applied to the balancing of turbine rotors, a two part casing 1 encloses the rotor which is mounted on yieldable bearings 17, 18. Steam or air to drive the rotor is preheated in a coil 21, and is admitted through a pipe 16 and nozzle 14. A hole in the casing admits a grinding-wheel 3 carried on the shaft of an electric motor 4 which together with the wheel 3 can be fed in two directions at right angles as shown. The lower parts of the bearings are equipped with oil supply and discharge pipes 19, 20. A tachometer 24 is driven through worm gear 23 while a vibration indicator 27 is fitted at the other end of the shaft. This instrument comprises a needle 27 and adjustable weight fitted to the outer race of a ball bearing the inner race of which is carried on the shaft. The rotor is run at a speed which is an odd multiple or submultiple of the critical speed, and the excess material ground off until the indicator 27 reads zero. If the system is supported on one side only, the speed should be an even multiple or submultiple of the critical speed.
