Abstract
186,005. Charnaux, L. M. C. Jan. 26, 1922. Bougies; catheters; dilators. -In order to facilitate the entrance of rubber or like bougies, catheters, and like surgical instruments, they are formed with a terminal portion having a tapered helix, preferably of expanding pitch. The taper may be uniform, as shown in Fig. 5, or it may have one or more depressions as shown at c, Fig. 7, so as to render the instrument more flexible, for treating cases of enlarged prostate or the like. The terminal portion may be made in one with the instrument or may be separately attached to it, in which case it may be of metal. In using the instrument, the helical groove is filled with lubricant, and the instrument introduced in the ordinary manner until a stricture is reached, when a rotation is given to it to cause it to pass the stricture.
