Abstract
185,465. Greve, E. E., and Reed, S. C. May 4, 1921. Bore.hole apparatus.-In a well-drilling apparatus, a motor 7 is carried by a casing 5 forming an oil bath for reducing-gearing 21 which communicates motion from the motor to a spindle 18, the latter being slidably connected to the drill tubes 44 by a collar 31 with lugs engaging internal vertical grooves 46 in a collar 45; the casing 5 is suspended by a bail 10 from a derrick and is guided in its vertical motion by rods or cables 3, while water supplied to a chamber 43 in the casing 5 passes through apertures 28 in the spindle 18 to the drill tubes. In a modification, the motor drives the spindle 18 directly and the latter is hollow throughout and is connected to a goose neck above the motor, the goose neck being connected to the water-supply means.
