Abstract

522,750. Rock drills. ROBERTSON, D. DE M. Dec. 15, 1938, No. 36530. [Class 124] In a rock drill, the steel M is detachably secured in a recess in a spindle R which rotates and reciprocates between bushes F and water seals H enclosing a space J to which water is fed laterally by a pipe K and from which water flows through one or more passages N in the spindle into an axial hole S in the steel, each water seal comprising a stuffing box with packing compressed by an independently adjustable gland G. A round steel may be secured to the spindle by means of an enlarged screwed portion, or a hexagonal steel may be secured therein by means of a spring retainer. The lower end of the spindle may be strengthened by means of a lipped collar L sweated thereon. The bushes F are provided with oil holes, and the drill is vented at T.
