Abstract

201,807. Arbon, P. Sept. 27, 1922. Bore-hole apparatus.-A swivel jar for use in well-drilling comprises a cylinder 9, Fig. 2, carrying the string of tools and containing a jar or block 11 connected to the operating rope 5, the weight of the tools &c. being transferred to the jar by means of a spring 12 and interposed member 16, while when the tools stick in the borehole, a blow may be struck by the jar on an annular shoulder 10 in the cylinder. In a modification the cylinder is of uniform diameter throughout and the two bores containing the spring and the jar are equal in diameter. The device is described as being used in connection with a. drilling machine, Fig. 1, wherein the rope 5 passes over a derrick to a brake-controlled bullwheel 6, the tools being reciprocated when spudding by means of a sleeve 4 slidably engaging the rope 5 and connected by a rope 3 to a crank 1; in later drilling operations, the crank operates the tools through a walking beam.
