Abstract

361,961. Borehole apparatus. WIGLE, W. B., 1207, North Willow Street, Compton, and TRAUSE, E. A., 3207, West 21st Street, Los Angeles, both in California, U.S.A. Aug. 27, 1930, No. 25586. [Class 85.] A jar for use in welldrilling operations comprises a casing 5 provided at its upper end with an anvil 6 with a polygonal bore slidably engaging the polygonal stem 7 of a hammer member H secured to the drill string, latches 22 being pivoted to the hammer member; on forcing down the latter, the latches ride over surface 29 of a member 28 pressed by a spring 32, and are thus forced into engagement with slots 26 in the casing and held by the member 28. An upper tubular member 27 o:n the member 28 slides in the bore of the hammer member, while a lower tubular member 35 has ports 38 which are closed when the parts are in locked relation. The member 35 has a ball check valve allowing passage of fluid when the apparatus is lowered into a well. In use, when the parts are locked as in Fig. 3, a pull is applied to the drill string and fluid pressure is applied through the latter to depress the member 28 and release the latches, the hammer then striking the anvil while the fluid passes out through ports 38.
