Abstract

185,352. Swanberg, J. F. Nov. 23, 1921. Valves.-A ventilator, particularly for ships, of the type having a cover or valve capable of being raised and lowered and simultaneously tilted to open the passage, is provided with pawl and ratchet mechanism to retain the cover in any desired position. The ventilator shown comprises a cowl 7 fitting over the shaft top 6, at the top of which is a seating for the cover or valve 8, which in the closed position rests upon a gasket 10. The valve 8 is pivotally mounted on a spindle 15 having a swivel connection to a rack-bar 22 by which the valve is raised or lowered. A link 20 causes the valve when raised to tilt to an inclined position, and the spindle 15 may also be rotated to bring the valve into a position where it offers least resistance to the air. The rack-bar 22 is operated by a pinion 24 operated by an external crank 28, on the shaft of which is a ratchet wheel 29 which may be held against movement in either direction by a reversible pawl 30.
