VENTILATING HOOD-SECTION To all 'whom #may concern.'
zen of the United States,l and a resident of the city and county of Denver, State of Colorado, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ventilating Hood-Sections, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
YMy invention is an improvement in antomobile lioods which are' used to inelose the engine and it relates in particular to means for Ventilating and cooling the engine space under the hood.r the amount of ventilation afforded heingcontrollable to' Suit conditions. Broadly speaking rnydevicel comprises providing,r the swinging hood panels with open or screened portions which are adapted to be covered or nncoveredrby sliding door seetions. My invention also contemplates furnishing means operable from the drivers seat for controlling the positions of theel-iding doors. Further and more particular objects and advantages of my invention will later' ap nearfrom this specification.
n ltlie single sheet of drawings accompnnying this application and forming a part hereon Fignre 1 is a side elevation of the front end of an automobile with my invention applied thereto, the inner door being-shown at one extremity of itstravel, the outer door being midway, and a portion oi" the outer door being broken away to sliowrthevconnections for operating the inner door from the drivers seat;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line .2l-.2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line Il 3 of Fig, l; and
Vi 1.' Al is a detail on enlarged scale showiner a preferred means of connecting the 0peral iner rod to the inner door.
Referring to the drawings, in which like characters of reference designate like parte in la several views, it will he clear that I sub# 'nnte for the customary swinging hood panel a special panel, hingingr it to the remaining.r parts in the customary manner. In the preferred construction of this panel shown in the drawings it comprises a fiat metal frame 5 formed with eyes 6 onvits upper edge for longing' and to which framev 5 is secured a screen if'. The ironie 5 also comprises a central vertiealer his!" 8 in Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led February 23, 1918. Serial No. 218,870.
Patented Nov. 55', 19in.
'which there is a circular opening 9 which 55 registers with a similar opening in 'the ser 'ff-i u t. Secured to the frame o on the meer there is e. rectangular guide frame 10 Winoo frame is U-sh-aped in cross section. te vide tracks in which the innerdoor may i run. A similar guide frame ll isn located on. the outer side of the frame 5.
The outer door 12 is slidably mounted the guide frame il and is provided w hand grip 13 for operatingthe same. inne;1 door' le is likewise slidahly meent in the v: ys in the guide frame i() en. door carries means whereby it may erated from the drivers seeti d These means may conveniently comprise a bracket 15 mounted on the door le and cerrying swiveled thereto an interioridJ three ed socket 16. rod 17 is three-.ded forward and in said socket l5 and at its rear end through the dash it? provided 'with a head l9fffithin of the driver. 'A'
The enter guide frame il is pr provided with en extrai'nem'ber 20 en.- alongg 'its lower edve to furnish en ahum .n for the customary hood panel ciel vices without danger of co guide frame il so te inte. ready movement the outer The inner door cmay also be provided a handle 2.1. for its ready manipulation in easey the clash operating Ineens :shonl'd ne dispensed with.
The manner of operating my device W lie evident 'from the foregoing. il sired to aiord the engine space .r
, ver tilation this may ne accomplished `ey adjusting the doors so that notie fire in a forward or rear position or iii-intermediate positions,
as desired. H the weather should become cooler or rainy the hood may .be readily closed again by moving the doors to opposite extreme ositions. l
if it, we desired to he able to operate the ventilating means Without leaving the driyo1"s seat, this can he accomplished by connecting the. inner door to the rod 'i7 screwing the latter into thel socket 18. pull or push on the red 17 Wiil then nieve the inner door so as to permit` the' desired ventilation. When itis desired te open the' hood the rod 17 should he disconnected,
-Whielrcan readily done by' unsereving" neet the, rod 17 it may be easily 2(guided to place by the fingers introduced through the (mening 9 provided therefor.
Having thus described my invention what. 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In an automobile hood, a swinging panel, and a, sliding section in said panel, 'whereby said section may be moved to eontrol the flow ol? air through the space. under said hood.
E2. In an auto-mobile hood, a swinging panel, a `guide way Jformed on Said panel, al sliding door mounted in said guide way, and means for operating` said door.
3. Inl an automobile hood, a swinging;l panel, said panel comprising an open 4frame and a aidel way on each side thereof, and a Sliding door mounted in each `fuide way.
4. In an automobile hood, a Swinging panel, Said.- panel comprisingv a screened open framewvitli a guide way on eaeli laide thereof, and a slidinbr door mounted in eaeh guide way.
5. In an automobile hood, a swinging panel, Sai-d panel comprising an open frame with a guide way on each side thereof, a sliding door mounted in each guide way,
,and an operating' rod conneeted to the inner dom and passing' through the dash of said 't'. A11 automobile hood having' a .-'lidin;`V
seetion therein, and an operating rod eonneeted to said seetion and passing through the daeh of Said auton'lobile, whereby said Section may be n'mved to eontroll'he flou' ol air through the space under said hood.
S. ,in automobile hood ha ving a swinging panel eompriaing' a sereened open frame,v
and means carried by the frame lor eouvv trolling the lowof an' therethrough into the Space under the hood.
9. An automobile hood bavingll an outAV nardly swinging panel comprising;r a 'irame having an opening therein, and means earried b v the frame for eonl'rolling the flow of air theretln'ough into the space undei` said hood.
In teslnnony whereof l have heren-ite aliixed my signature.
CHARLES HILL.
