Combustion chambers, secondary; baffles; regenerators.-In a furnace for heating metal articles or melting metals or for supplying hot air for drying moulds, the gases on leaving the fire-chamber are drawn through flat converging slots 4 in a hollow body 3 arranged between the fire-chamber and the heating-chamber 2, the induction being effected by a fine jet 7 of compressed air, preferably preheated in a coil 6. Smoke is thus consumed and it is possible to use inferior fuel such as raw lignite &c. Air for the furnace passing through the grate 8 and side apertures 20 is regeneratively heated in zigzag passages in contact with a zigzag waste-gas flue 11. In the case of a mould-drying furnace, the slotted hollow body 18 is arranged at the back of the fire-chamber, Fig. 3. Specification 22656/95 is referred to.
