Abstract
185,241. Maypole Margarine Works, Ltd., and Michelsen, O. June 8, 1921. Extrusion machines.-Margarine in flaky or granular form is consolidated by a compressing device and passed, while still under pressure, through a blender. Intermittent pressure may be applied by means of a device such as described in Specification 169,783 comprising one or more pistons F, Fig. 1, working in cylinders A, the flakes or granules being supplied through a hopper to the inlet a<1> which is open at one end of the stroke but is closed as the piston advances, the margarine being forced through constricted outlets D. Alternatively a rotary pump producing continuous pressure, such as a pair of toothed wheels or drums M, Fig. 4. may be employed. The blending mechanism is of known type, comprising a pair of intermeshing helical blades K mounted on parallel shafts k and rapidly rotated in a casing G closely surrounding the blades. The blender is arranged in either a vertical or a horizontal position, and the outlet q<1> is sufficiently constricted to maintain the pressure in the casing.
