Locomotive with an internal combustion engine and utilization more relaxed
Combustion gases and compressed air for propulsion The invention relates to
Locomotives with an internal combustion engine whose performance is mediated by a
with compressed gas powered drive engine on the driving axles of the locomotive
is transmitted. It is known in such locomotives, the prime mover
to operate with the only partially expanded combustion gases of the internal combustion engine.
This arrangement has the disadvantage that because of the cylinders of the drive machine
The high temperature of the combustion gases provides a special cooling «-erden
must, and also the overflow valve, which is surrounded by very hot gases,
quick b: damaged. It is also known to see the performance of the Bremilcraft engine through
to transmit compressed air generated in the work cylinder of this machine. 1-lierbei becomes
But then it is necessary to pre-compress the combustion air high, so that a
High capacity compressor must be used; also arise here
When the air flows into the working cylinder, it jolts the gear of the machine
and adversely affect the efficiency. It is also known per se that
Drive machine a mixture of only partially expanded combustion gases and
to supply compressed air. This increases the temperature of the combustion gases
reduced to such an extent that cooling of the prime mover is unnecessary and that
The overflow valve is exposed to significantly lower temperatures; However, it is
required to compress the air at least to the initial pressure with which
the drive machine operated with compressed gas works. These arrangements
therefore require a large and heavy compressor to be installed in the locomotive
becomes very uncomfortable. In addition, the high pressure used occurs in the line
considerable losses between the compressor and the cylinder of the internal combustion engine.
The invention is intended to avoid these inconveniences in a simple manner
will. The invention consists in that the air is the cylinder of the internal combustion engine
fed with low compression and further compressed in the cylinder of this machine
whereupon some of the compressed air is used to operate the prime mover
removed and then continued the compression in the cylinder of the internal combustion engine
will.

The way in which the system works can best be seen on the basis of the diagram
of Fig. 2 explain.
After the expansion of the combustion gases generated in cylinder K of the internal combustion engine, beginning at point a of the diagram, has taken place up to point b, the connection of cylinder K to an intermediate container L is established at point b by opening overflow valve k4. Gases then flow from the container L into the cylinder K on the path bc. After the piston has been reversed at point c, the combustion gases are eluted into the container L on the path cd. The volume of the container L is so large that the pressure in it does not noticeably rise even when the combustion gases are expelled into the container L. At point d the overflow valve k4 closes again, and the combustion gases still present in the compression chamber of cylinder K expand until the exhaust valve k3 opens at point e of the diagram. The cylinder is then filled with low pre-compressed air, if necessary while flushing out the remainder of the combustion gases through the valve k1. When the piston is reversed, the compression of the air begins at point f; the compression is then interrupted as soon as the pressure in the cylinder K has reached the pressure in the container L by opening the overflow valve k4 at point g, whereupon the piston pushes the compressed air into the container L. At point h , overflow valve k4 is closed again and compression is continued, whereupon the fuel is injected through valve h = and ignition takes place towards the end of the piston stroke.
The invention has the advantage that, despite the fact that the for
Air compression required separate air compressors to have only small dimensions
needs the air to cool the combustion gases by mixing with them in
sufficient quantity and with sufficient prints is available.
