Abstract

185,089. Revere Rubber Co., (Assignees of Gibbons, W. A.). Aug. 24, 1921, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Balls.-Tennis and like balls are vulcanized in a mould under internal fluid pressure, which shapes the article, and after removal from the mould, expands it to a perdetermined size at a predetermined pressure. Definite quantities of a gas-producing substance or mixture, e.g. 0.7 gm. of sodium nitrite and 0.532 gm. of ammonium chloride, although an excess of the latter is generally employed, are placed in a tennis ball " centre " in a mould, and on heating, evolve nitrogen which expands the centre in the mould, and after completion of the cure and removal of the mould, expands the centre further, and maintains a pressure of approximately 22.4 lbs. per sq. in. above atmospheric. Smaller quantities produce lower pressures, which however should always be at least 10 lbs. above atmospheric pressure. The gas-producing ingredients may be introduced in solid form, or in solution, or mixed with agar-agar, or the like. This latter method has the advantage that a gummy, protective coating is formed within the ball. Other gas producing substances specified are (1) any ammonium salt, and any nitrite, (2) sodium peroxide and water, (3) barium peroxide and acid, (4) hydrogen peroxide, (5) any organic compound or mixture, which on heating evolves nitrogen,. (6) an alkali and an ammonium salt.
