Abstract

184,867. Johansen, O. May 19, 1921. Openers; feeding openers.-In a machine for making fibrous waste from rags &c. the material is carried by an endless belt 11 to serrated feedrolls 6, 7 which deliver it to a small picking- drum 5, whence it passes to a large picking-drum 3 and is severed into single threads. The rolls 6, 7 have grooves engaged by combs 29, 38, the comb 29 forming an extension of a basket 26 having slots for the passage of the pins 50 on the drum 5. The material is pressed against the basket 26 by a spring-supported slotted grid' 32 and passes over a shoe 40 provided with grooves for the pins of the small drum. The grid 32 is carried on pivoted arms 37 so that it can be swung away when a pivoted support 34 is turned down. The drum 5 is engaged by a clearing-comb 18 carried by spring-pressed arms 17. The casing surrounding the large drum 3 has a lining 41 formed with grooves for the pins 4. The main shaft 43 carries a brake disc 42 adapted to be engaged by a shoe 41<a> on a weighted lever 44 engaging a crank 46 on a cross shaft 47 which operates bevel gearing 48, 49 so as to shift the belt fork lever 52. A handle 59, which is connected to an arm 58 on the shaft 47 by a link 58<a>, normally engages a notch 60, Fig. 5, but is released therefrom, if the small arm becomes clogged, so that it is moved to the position shown in dotted lines by the lever 44 and the driving-belt is shifted on to the loose pulley. The handle 59 is released by a lever 61 connected to a driving-sleeve 63, which is splined on the shaft 64 of the picking-drum 5 and is connected to the driving-wheel by a tooth 65 so that it is moved longitudinally if the rotation of the shaft is hindered'. Before starting the machine, the shaft 64 is turned by a hand-wheel 69 until the tooth 65 again engages its recess.
