Abstract
172,862. Robertson, A. R., and Dunsmore, A. F. Dec. 8, 1920. Strainer separators.-A centrifugal machine for trying or treating sugar or other granular material has a plough J normally rotating with the basket but provided with means for raising and lowering it along the vertical wall of the basket. The sleeve A on the machine spindle B carries the brake drum C, Fig. 1, and has another sleeve D keyed to it at its lower end. The sleeve D carries the plough J, and a hand-lever G is con. nected by links F to the non-rotary side of a muff E at the top of the sleeve D. For the discharge of the basket, the power is shut off and the lever G is operated to cause the plough J to travel upwards, the friction producing a slower rotation of the plough than the basket. The muff E may be connected by chains over pulleys to counterweights. In a modification, a sleeve with an internal screw-thread and an operating handwheel is used to raise the plough. In a modification for under-driven machines, the basket N is mounted on a sleeve R, Fig. 5, with a brake drum S. On the upper end of the sleeve D carrying the plough J is journaled a flange W and any convenient means is used to raise the flange to cause axial movement of the plough.
