Abstract

183,592. North, N. E., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. April 27,1921. Controllers.-Relates to rheostats of the kind in which two contact brushes wipe continuously over a revolving structure like a commutator, having the bars connected to different points of a resistance, the brushes being separated or moved closer together in order to increase or decrease the effective resistance of the arrangement. According to the invention the revolving structure carrying the commutator bars 1, also comprises resistance elements 4 in the form of blades disposed to act as a ventilating-fan, air being drawn in axially through an opening 6 and blow cut radially through an opening 7 of a casing 5. The brushes 2, 3 which include maximum resistance in the position shown are caused to approach each other by means of gearing 16 driven through a clutch 20 from the commutator shaft 8. The apparatus may be used as a starter and ventilating-fan for a motor.
