Alternating - current motors.-In an alternating - current commutator motor of the type described in Specification 25358/11, and required to give a continuously variable speed over a stated range and, in addition, a sudden momentary change to another speed, such as is demanded in the " narrowing " operations of knitting machines, the continuous speed variation is obtained by displacing the brushes, and the sudden change by means of a change-over switch between the secondary windings and the brushes so arranged as to disconnect the windings and short-circuit them. Fig. 1 shows the connections given in one position of the switch whereby any speed within the predetermined range may be obtained by altering the distance S between the brush pairs. In the other position, the secondary windings are short-circuited on themselves, as in Fig. 2. The switch may be operated automatically by the knitting machine.
