Abstract

183,014. Spencer, Moulton, & Co., Ltd., G., and Cross, J. W. May 26, 1921. Shaft couplings.-In yielding shaft couplings, particularly applicable to motor vehicles, of the type in which rubber blocks are located between radial vanes projecting from the coupling-discs, the blocks are in initial compression and are of segmental cross-section and truncated triangular longitudinal section. A cast or pressed disc 1, provided with radial fins 10 and similarly secured 8 to a flange 5 on one shaft 6, has a spigot 4 with a rounded end engaging in a boss 3 on a disc 2 provided with radial fins 10 and similarly secured to a flange 5' on the other shaft 6'. Rubber blocks 12, 13 in initial compression seat in recesses 17 in the fins and are supported against centrifugal force by lugs 18 contacting with an annular casing 19 integral with, or secured by screws 20 to the disc 1. The blocks are free to expand radially, and in order to allow additional room, they are tapered, as shown in Fig. 1, to leave lateral spaces 16. When the drive is unidirectional, as when the coupling is situated between the engine and gear-box of a motor vehicle, the driving-blocks 12 may, as shown, be longer then the " rebound " blocks 13, but when the drive is subject to reversal, as when the coupling is situated between the gear-box and rear axle, they are of equal size. The heads of the screws 8, 10 may be locked by wires threaded through holes 9, 21, or otherwise.
