Animal traps.-A self-setting trap for rats &c. comprises a primary prison a, with a door a<1> shown in its open position, a final prison f and a passage d connecting them. The animal approaching the bait box b<1> in the prison a depresses the platform b about the pivot b<2>, thus rocking the counterbalanced arm c so that the finger c<2> is depressed, allowing the door a' to close by gravity. This door swings on a hinge pin a<2>, which is slightly inclined to the vertical, and a bolt n is shot when it closes. The animal, attempting to escape up the passage d, depresses the platform d<1> and passes through the non-return gate f<1> into the final prison f. The depression of the platform d<1> moves one arm j<1> of a crank pivoted at j so that the other arm j<2> is raised, and raises with it the arm m. This draws the bolt n- and re-opens the gate a<1>; the finger c<2> then engages with the door a<1> to hold it in the open position.
