Vices.-A sliding-jaw vice of the kind in which the movable jaw is carried by spaced slides adjustable simultaneously by screws on geared parallel shafts is constructed with screws 6, 6a mounted in the body 1 of the vice carrying the fixed jaw 2 and engaging slides 4 attached to the movable, jaw 3, the slides 4 moving in rabbeted portions 3, Fig. 6, of the vice-body 1. The screws are geared together by means of pinions 9, 10 mounted in a housing 7 at the rear of the fixed jaw 2, and the jaws are adjusted by a pinion 11 on a shaft 12 which is operated by a handle 13 mounted in front of the movable jaw 5. The shaft 12 moves with the jaw 5 and has a spired connection with the pinion 11. The shaft 12 projects beyond the rear of the fixed jaw, and is protected from filings by a hood 15. In a modification, the pinion 11, Fig. 4, may be mounted on a sleeve 10<a> having a splined connection with the shaft 12. The body 1 may be formed with an aperture 18 to receive an anvil 19, or like implement, and is surrounded by a beading 19<a> upon which metal bars may be beaten to shape.
