Abstract
180,060. Hilton, T., and Hilton, F. Feb. 18, 1921. Openers, cleaners, etc.; feeding openers &c.- In a machine for carding or dressing, or opening or cleaning flocks, wool, kapok, hair, &c. the fibre is fed forward to the spiked drum 14 by an endless apron 8 comprising a number of endless helical springs arranged side by side. The ends of the springs 5, Fig. 5, are connected by screwing in a piece 9 of smaller diameter or by screwing one end, which is reduced in diameter, into the other. The drum 14 comprises end discs connected by longitudinal rods 16, Figs. 1 and 4. The teeth 17 are of resilient metal, which is coiled round one rod and provided with a hook 18<1> to engage an adjacent rod. The action of the drum tends to tighten the coil round the rod 16. The drum rotates in a casing 2 provided with internal spikes, which may be inclined in the direction - of rotation of the drum. The spring teeth may be mounted on the casing and the spikes on the drum. The treated material falls into a chamber 20, and the dust &c. is drawn away by a fan 25 and collected' in a bag 27. The machine is driven by a crank-handle 28 or by power. Two or more drums with graded teeth may be used.
